Tim & Ruth's holiday in France 2019

Day 3. Wed 17 July 2019 The plan for today was to visit Bayeux We were looking for a new hall stairs and landing carpet, so Bayeux was as good a place to start as anywhere.  But when we got there, we only found old stock.  No use to us whatsoever! Seriously though, the intention was to have a look at the Bayeux tapestry today. We found a camping car aire, - a free place to leave your campervan.  Reserved for campers.  All over the place in France right now.  It makes it easy, but rumour has it that you run the risk of having the bikes stolen off the back of your van, or having your van burgled while you are away from it.  But we took the chance, as we had no bikes with us, and very little of value inside. We bought a combined ticket for the war museum nearby, and for the tapestry display for 12 Euros each.  The museum was easily worth the 3 Euros extra, above the 9 Euros we would have to pay for seeing the tapestry. Day 2, 16 July 2019 A visit to the Normandy D-Day beaches, Arramanches, and the American War Cemetery. It's all very sobering. Very sobering to think that 75 years ago, people like my son, or Ruth's sons, could be running up the beaches to be confronted by German machine-gunfire.  Gold Beach, Omaha Beach, and the other beaches would have been covered by Allied Forces in their valiant attempt to repel The Hun. Most sobering is that on Omaha Beach where the US Forces stormed, 9 out of 10 soldiers died.  That is a 90% casualty rate.  Staggering. It was heartening in these days of Brexit uncertainty to see that there is great deal of warmth and respect of the British.  It may be 75 years ago that we helped the French out, but they haven't forgotten it.  British, US, and Canadian flags were up everywhere.  The lampposts had pictures of  a different one of "our boys" on each post.  Shops had "Thank you" painted on their windows.  I...

Here we go again!  For those who are new to our blog, - we have called it "Truth" France, etc, etc, because it's Tim & Ruth combining in a cheesy title "TRuth".  Get it!?! Here we go again, on another holiday. The last time we went away, I caught a touch of shingles, was side-lined for a few weeks and we had to cut short our break after just 2 days. It was a pants experience, quite honestly. We had made our minds up to go to Suffolk and Norfolk, as the weather was good there for the week we had available. A visit to Great Yarmouth general hospital on day 2 confirmed shingles, all over my left eye, and eyebrow, and round the left side of my face. The experience at that hospital was second to none!  I was in, assessed, saw a doctor, and an ophthalmic department, and out in just 40 minutes with medication.  It was superb!
